Since each of our last review, Avast possesses produced some stable improvements. The apps are definitely more consumer-friendly now support a variety of protocols including OpenVPN, the industry-standard; the new beta Mimic protocol to bypass VPN detection and get you connected in VPN-unfriendly locations; and a destroy switch that automatically disconnects your device if your connection drops. Additionally, it updates its warrant canary tri-monthly to warn users of any gag orders (though we’ve noticed it’s not necessarily on top of bringing up-to-date, which is a minor worrying).
The Windows and Android software take up a bit more display real estate than some of the competition, but they have a clean design that’s easy to use, familiar via Avast’s anti virus software. In addition, it has a built-in tutorial that walks you through the basic principles and talks about how the features work. This supports a range of protocols across the platform, with the exception of iOS devices which in turn only have the IPSec and IKEv2/IPsec options. It also offers break up tunneling, Wi fi Threat Protect and local network bypass. Additionally, it lets you place your VPN location coming from a list, which is useful if you need to change servers on the run or designed for specific uses like lady.
